What is a USP? (Unique Selling Point, Position
or Unique Selling Proposition)
The Unique Selling Proposition (also Unique Selling Point) is a marketing concept that was first proposed as a theory to explain a pattern among successful advertising campaigns of the early 1940s. It states that such campaigns made unique propositions to the customer and that this convinced them to switch brands.
Here’s the USP Definition at a glance:
- Unique - It clearly sets you apart from your competition, positioning you the more logical choice.
- Selling - It persuades another to exchange money for a product or service.
- Proposition - It is a proposal or offer suggested for acceptance.
In today's competitive market, your small business cannot thrive if you are using the same old "me too" marketing that everyone else is using.
Your business absolutely has to have a USP that "cuts through the clutter", separates you from the competition, and positions you as the best choice... the ONLY choice.
KISS- Keep it Simple… Seriously
You’ve probably heard of the “KISS” analogy of not overcomplicating things when it comes to communication and actions. It applies here. Your USP has to be direct, to the point, and very simple so you can remember it. When you have that, your target markets will remember it also.
A good rule of thumb for most marketing communication is to keep your message and words so simple that a 12 year old can understand it. This is a good rule to remember. Your goal of marketing is to ‘break through the noise” of the competition (and marketing from other companies too) so that you connect with your ideal, target market client.
Out of the Mouths of Babes
About two years ago I was refining my USP for Sweet Marketing Solutions. We are strategic direct response marketing specialists. That is a lot to remember and most people will not understand it. Simply stated, it means, we are experts at helping clients create marketing campaigns that use a variety of marketing avenues with a well defined message to connect with target audiences and get results.
One day while I was working on my USP, my children happened to be at the office. Just for curiosity sake I asked my boys if they new what Sweet Marketing Solutions did. At the time, my older son was 7, my younger one 5. (My younger boy was still working on simply pronouncing the name of the company correctly!)
After I asked them if they knew what we did, I wasn’t really sure what I was going to hear. This is what they said: My older son quickly and confidently stated “We help businesses get more customers…”
My younger son heard that, paused a minute then quickly added … “and make money!” I was shocked and very pleased! They got it. They understood our business down to the most rudimentary and basic level. “We help businesses get more customers and make money".
Now It’s Your Turn
Building your USP takes some effort, but it is absolutely worth it because of the added advantage you'll have in the market.
