"Do it Yourself" DIY Marketing Plans

Once you understand more of the basics of what goes into a marketing plan, you may be ready to create a more involved marketing plan. DIY style "Do it Yourself" cookie cutter, fill in the blank marketing plans can work for certain elements of your small business growth, but the ones I’ve seen, usually are very, very generic. So much so that when it comes to being a benefit for my clients, those plans are of no effect.

 

The things you need to consider at that point are:

* What is the purpose of a bigger marketing plan?

* What do I want out of it?

* How do we need our small business to grow?

* Will this really support us or should I work with a consultant that specializes in making custom marketing plans?

From first hand experience within my own marketing company, Sweet Marketing Solutions, of personally researching, developing, strategizing and writing marketing plans for my marketing clients, I know that a small plan that we produce takes about 100 hours. Our larger marketing plans for clients ready to really become proactive and propel their business, I can easily put 200 hours into the plan. Not for the faint at heart!

One note on this, the marketing plans that I produce cover a 5 year span and are anywhere from 100-200 pages long. They essentially become your small business marketing bible. You cannot get that kind of detail from a cookie cutter DIY marketing plan.

One marketing plan I wrote for a small business client helped her close a $27 Million Dollar loan for her business. Not too shabby!

 
Here are a couple of last thoughts on doing a cookie cutter Do it Yourself marketing plan or having someone else write a plan for you.

If you jump into wanting to write a cookie cutter DIY marketing plan right now, you may not understand everything in it. I suggest working through this marketing course first. It will help you.

Some things in marketing plans you may not understand why you need that information. If you want to have someone else to write one for you, not everyone takes the time to know your differences.

Last, they may not have had experience in development and implementation of ideas in the marketing plan they write. Is it ‘book theory’- or have they actually used these ideas themselves?
